How to Freshen the Appearance of Your Asphalt Driveway

Asphalt is a great material to use for driveways because it is budget friendly, easy to install, and can last a long time with proper care. When you get asphalt installed, you enjoy the clean appearance and sleek look, but this can fade over time. With regular use and age, asphalt has a tendency to fade in color, get cracks, and lose its overall luster. Cleaning and sealing the driveway is a great way to improve its appearance and keep it looking new for many years.

Wash it Thoroughly

Start the process of improving your driveway by washing it thoroughly. If you have oil or grease stains, tackle those first. Use a good oil cleaner on the driveway, being sure the type you choose is safe to use on asphalt. Apply it liberally to all stains and use a stiff brush to scrub away the grease stains. Once that is done, use an asphalt cleaner over the entire surface and rinse it away with a hose. If you have a pressure cleaner, even better. The high pressure helps to remove dust, debris, and any lingering oil that you weren't able to remove. When cleaning the driveway, choose a day when it isn't windy so you don't end up with more dirt and dust on the surface.

Clean and Fill the Cracks

You might have some cracks on the surface of you driveway that need to be addressed before you apply the sealant. Make sure you clean them out before filling them. Larger cracks often get dirt and debris caught inside, including small pebbles, weeds, and sticks. Remove all debris from inside the cracks and pull any weeds you find. Use a trowel to gently remove debris caught deep in the cracks, but be careful not to widen the cracks. You can use a hose or pressure washer to clean them out further if necessary.

Once they have been cleaned out, fill them with an asphalt crack filling product. The filler should come ready to use right out of the package with no special mixing involved. Apply the crack filler to the cracks and let it dry completely before continuing.

Seal the Driveway

Sealing the driveway not only protects it from further damage, but it gives your driveway a sleek look that improves its overall appearance. With sealant, you need to choose the right day to apply it. Avoid a day when inclement weather is expected, including rain or heavy winds. Also avoid high heat, as this can cause the sealant to dry prematurely, which will not give the driveway a smooth appearance. An overcast or cloudy day is ideal for sealing an asphalt driveway.

When applying the sealant, always start going parallel to your house. Start at the top of the driveway near your house or garage, and gradually move in lines across the driveway until you reach the end of it near the street. You will then apply an additional layer on the driveway, but this type going perpendicular. When applying each layer, use a squeegee to smooth out the surface and avoid bubbles or uneven areas. Let it dry completely before you drive or walk on it afterward.
